Armenia Tree Project Launches “Armenia 17 x 17” Climate-Smart Forestry Pilot

Armenia Tree Project has been awarded a competitive grant from the European Forest Institute (EFI) under the FORWARDS programme to implement the “Armenia 17 x 17” climate-smart forestry pilot.
Over the next year, ATP will restore 17 hectares of degraded land in the community of Tsaghkaber, Lori Province, through community-led afforestation using biodiverse native tree species grown in ATP’s nurseries.
The project builds on ATP’s more than 30 years of experience restoring landscapes and strengthening communities across Armenia. With more than 9 million trees planted to date, ATP will apply a climate-smart forestry approach that combines site-specific environmental assessment, careful species selection, and phased planting to improve biodiversity, strengthen ecosystem resilience, and support long-term forest health.
In addition to restoration activities, the project will engage citizens through environmental education and outreach programs in 3–5 communities. At least 20 seasonal green jobs will be created for local residents, including women, helping ensure that environmental and social benefits go hand in hand.
The Tsaghkaber site will also serve as a long-term demonstration area for climate-smart forestry in Armenia, providing valuable experience and lessons ahead of COP17, which Armenia will host in 2026.
Through this pilot, ATP continues its commitment to developing practical, community-based solutions that contribute to forest restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable rural development.
