ATP’s new challenge is to bring life to one of Armenia’s most demanding climate zones — by creating a forest in Shirak’s Pemzashen community.

The idea began with the community, inspired by the forest taking shape in neighboring Lernakert. Residents of Pemzashen approached their community leader, who then reached out to ATP. Together, they chose the land — 59 hectares — studied its climate and soil, and selected the most suitable tree species.
As in all ATP community planting projects, every step is carried out by local hands. But, as it often happens, the first year belongs to the brave ones — those who set aside doubt and step forward.
“I’m from Pemzashen. I’m the only one from my village this year — the rest are from Mets Sariar. They said there’s this kind of work, and I said I’ll come and do it. I’ve always worked with the land,” says Vardan Terzyan.
Soon, more people join. Each courageous worker brings five or six fellow villagers. They talk, compare, and realize — this is better than leaving home for work abroad.
“Of course it’s better to stay in the village — to work during the day and return home to my family in the evening,” says Razmik Zakaryan, a father of three.
“It’s been three years since I last went to Russia — now I know there’s work here at home. Why would I leave? I have jobs three times a year,” adds Hayk Zakaryan from Mets Sariar.
In the first stage, the entire area was fenced and reinforced with barbed wire to protect it from animals. Now comes the second stage — planting.
They have started with pine and birch, species chosen by ATP experts for their longevity and resilience. The seedlings come from ATP’s nurseries — grown from seed, nurtured with care, and now ready to grow on their own. This autumn, around 40,000 trees will be planted in this area.
In spring, during the third stage, more species will be added — oak, apple, pear, and other hardy native trees.
This forest can only grow to its full strength through our shared effort. By joining this mission, we help Armenia’s nature come alive — and give local families the chance to stay, work, and build their future at home.
As in other regions, the locals here gain employment, income, and—most importantly—a new forest, grown with their own hands.
